Audio Forum 2022

December 6 – 7, 2022 | Cultural center “Parobrod”
December 8, 2022 | Faculty of Dramatic Arts
As Audio Forum approached its decade of existence, it became clear that a watershed moment was approaching; to collect the impressions made in the previous ten years and continue in a new style.

As expected, numerous difficulties made the organizational efforts of Audio Forum 2022 kick in later than desired. In the mind of the organizer, it is clear that the event needs to happen; but after a brief calculation, rationalization begins before nothing was even created yet! But of course it couldn’t just end there.

A few months of intensive work paid off – Audio Forum 2022 was prepared in record time, with extremely tight availability of resources, limited workforce during preparations and a surprisingly complicated technical infrastructure. As we were squinting at the general flow of the conference, the audience quickly reassured us that Audio Forum 2022 was as successful as we’d hoped for, which came as a surprise to some.

Speakers

Janis Käune

Technical Application Engineer, Dear Reality

December 6, 2022 | 13:30 – 14:30 | online

Janis is a Technical Application Engineer at Dear Reality, a company that has been under Sennheiser since 2018.

Dear Reality operates in the field of “immersive audio controllers”, binauralization, Ambisonics and multi-channel encoders with spatial virtualization. Specifically, they develop plug-ins for use in music and sound design, in the following categories: Spatializer, Monitoring, Reverb, and Controller & Interactive.

One of Sennheiser’s sound virtualization business verticals is AMBEO, which we already had a chance to get to know during Audio Forum 2021 thanks to presenter Johannes Kares.

At Audio Forum 2022, using a system of 26 wireless headphones on-site, Janis played us examples of Dear Reality software implementation, to understand first hand exactly what their technology is trying to achieve.

Dimitrije Cvetković

Head of Audio, Mad Head Games

December 6, 2022 | 15:00 – 16:30 | on-site

Mad Head Games’ exciting scaling trajectory has seen sound design at the company grow from a one-person show to a five-person department by the year 2022. Dimitrije’s role in this was crucial – he co-founded the entire audio department at the company, allowing young and talented sound designers at the time an entry into video game sound design.

Dimitrije worked as a music performer, author and producer for more than a decade. He finished his studies at the Department of Recording and Sound Design of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade. In the meantime, he started a career as a sound designer for video games and, eventually, the development of the entire audio department at Mad Head Games.

At Audio Forum 2022, Dimitrije presented the process of working on the music design for the game “Scars Above” in detail , which he has been working on for several years, and which was published on February 2, 2023 for PC and consoles.

Martin Stig Andersen

Video game composer and sound designer (LIMBO, INSIDE, Wolfenstein ll: The New Colossus, Back 4 Blood , Control)

December 6, 2022 | 17:00 – 18:30 | online

Martin is known for the music and sound for the famous titles LIMBO, INSIDE, Wolfenstein ll: The New Colossus, Back 4 Blood and Control. He held a Q&A session at Audio Forum 2022, when the audience could finally ask the questions that had surely been piling up since the time of LIMBO.

Getting to know Martin at the Reboot Develop Blue 2022 conference in Dubrovnik led to his inclusion in the Audio Forum 2022 speaker line-up. It was interesting to see that the news of his guest appearance caused great excitement in the community once they’d realized what Martin has been working on in his career. All the video games from his portfolio occupy important places in the history of video games, which is why Martin’s guest appearance resonated far and wide.

In an outstanding, calm and thoughtful style unique to him, Martin introduced us to his career in video games through questions and answers, which, as of 2022, spanned just about ten years. From using a human skull as a resonator to working with naked performance artists for “The Huddle” from INSIDE, Martin’s creative process certainly gave the Audio Forum audience plenty of food for thought.

Michael Brauer

Grammy™ award winner | Music re-recording artist at the Electric Lady Studio B (New York, NY)

December 6, 2022 | 19:30 – 21:00 | online

It’s hard to say – will we remember Michael’s lecture because he made us laugh to tears or because of his rarely rich and long-lived portfolio?

Michael joined via video call, from his studio “Electric Lady”, where he has an unprecedented collection of vintage processors. With the topic “On mixing music for the world’s biggest productions”, he talked about key events during his thirty-year career, when Michael collaborated with the most popular artists in different genres, from the Rolling Stones to Coldplay. He is a seven-time Grammy™ winner, praised for the sonic approach he calls “BRAUERIZE”!

Grammy™ awards:

  • Angélique Kidjo – Sings (Best World Music Album) 2016
  • Angélique Kidjo – Eve (Best World Music Album) 2015
  • Calle 13 – Multi Viral (Best Latin Rock, Alternative Or Urban Album) 2015
  • John Mayer – Battle Studies (Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical) 2011
  • Coldplay – Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (Best Rock Album) 2009
  • John Mayer – Continuum (Best Pop Vocal Album) 2007
  • Coldplay – Parachutes (Best Alternative Music Performance) 2000

Michael is the convincing favorite of Audio Forum 2022 who, with his unexpected wit, repeatedly pointed out loudly and convincingly what makes one the best in the business. To the question “Why didn’t you become a music producer?” he answered simply – “Because I suck at it.”

Srđan Mitrić

Legal Expert, SOKOJ

December 7, 2022 | 15:00 – 16:30 | on-site

Srđan is a graduate lawyer, specializing in the field of intellectual property law, specifically – copyright. The choice of career and direction occurred due to a great love for creation, primarily music, which makes him a rare example of a lawyer narrowly profiled for legal issues over what the human mind produces during its work.

He spent years in the publishing company “Mascom” as a lawyer, where in cooperation with many creators from the territory of the Republic of Serbia, he worked on the constant enrichment of the domestic music catalog. During the Audio Forum 2022, he served as a lawyer at SOKOJ.

Srđan often appears at the Audio Forum conference for a simple reason – because it’s still not in our culture to “mist” our creative process with things we don’t like, love or that we find dragging. Therefore, the audience would approach Srđan’s lectures without much expectation but soon after we’d have difficulties getting him safely out of the building from the overwhelming onslaught of high-quality questions.

Of course, Srđan does not give any actual legal advice on Audio Forum, but surely provides information of great importance to everyone who, at least once in their life, has sung a melody that came to their mind out of thin air.

Randy Thom

Academy Award™ winner | Sound Design Director, Skywalker Sound

December 7, 2022 | 19:15 – 20:30 | online

During the preparations for Audio Forum 2022, Aleksandar Manja and Dejan Pejović made a short, disproportionately exciting phone call. The question “Can I get some details about the next lecturer?” was followed by Dejan’s answer: “What can I tell you, you know him well – Randy Tom!”

Randy Tom’s work and character permeates all educational institutions that teach the art and skill of sound design. With the topic “On sound design in animated film”, this “sound guru”, educator, one of the most important sound designers with fifteen nominations and two received Oscars™ – for feature and animated film – addressed us at Audio Forum 2022.

The impressive work biography speaks for itself, from which the feature films Apocalypse Now, The Right Stuff, Star Wars, Forrest Gump, The Revenant, but also the animated films Ice Age, How to Train Your Dragon, Rio, Shrek, The Incredibles should be singled out.

No matter how much time we set aside to talk to Randy, it wouldn’t be enough. However, we obviously managed to find out first-hand about the challenges of working on an animated film in one hour and fifteen minutes, from a person who has been working with sound since 1970!
